📸 The Pros and Cons of the GoPro 13 🎥
After three months of shooting with the latest GoPro 13 in Oaxaca, Mexico, I’ve had plenty of time to put this action camera to the test. If you’re considering upgrading or getting your first GoPro, here’s a breakdown of what I love—and what could be better.
🚫 The Cons
🔴 Low-light performance is disappointing – A newer smartphone will outperform it in dim conditions. (The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is only slightly better.)
🔴 Mediocre photo quality – Photos lack sharpness and detail compared to a modern phone or DSLR camera.
🔴 No adjustable f-stop – You can’t achieve a shallow depth of field for that beautiful background blur.
🔴 Limited field of view options – You’re restricted to wide and super-wide angles, with no zoom or macro settings.
🔴 Focus limitations – The standard lens can’t focus closer than two feet.
🔴 Overheating & battery drain – It’s better than past models, but extended use can still lead to overheating and rapid battery depletion. (The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is much better for battery life.)
✅ The Pros
🟢 Stunning 5.3K video in good light – The clarity and sharpness are incredible.
🟢 High-quality slow motion – It captures silky-smooth 120 FPS slow motion at 5.3K for up to five seconds, or 120 FPS at 4K for a long time.
🟢 Perfect for landscapes – Everything beyond two feet is in focus, making it great for wide scenic shots.
🟢 Excellent stabilization – Both regular and Boost image stabilization keep footage ultra-smooth.
🟢 Impressive time-lapse capabilities – Creates cinematic time-lapse videos with ease. (Be careful to shoot your time-lapse videos in video, not as individual photos.)
🟢 Waterproof down to 10 meters – No need for extra housing to take it underwater.
🟢 Better daylight video than top smartphones – In good lighting, it outperforms even the latest Apple, Google, and Samsung phones.
🟢 Compact and lightweight – With a small handgrip tripod, it’s easy to hold and ergonomically sound.
🟢 Versatile mounting options for purchase – Mount it on helmets, chest harnesses, and more for unique perspectives.
🟢 Batteries – Extra—non GoPro—batteries and chargers are inexpensive and work well.
🟢 Affordable and replaceable – At just $400, it’s a solid investment that won’t break the bank
Pros and Cons of Go Pro 13 Final Thoughts
The GoPro 13 is a powerhouse for action-packed adventures, travel, and landscape videography—especially in good lighting. It has a macro lens that I am not sold on—it’s better to use your smartphone. It’s not ideal for low-light situations, portraits, or macro photography, but if you need a rugged, versatile camera that delivers stunning video, it’s a fantastic choice.
